Autumn is my favorite time of year, and I think Halloween might be my favorite holiday. The coolness in the air, the bright leaves, and the fun costumes really give me nostalgia. While you're getting together your decorations, costumes, and candy, a nice spooky playlist can really help you get in the Halloween mood! I've put together a five-hour playlist of my chilling favorites.
The full playlist can be found on both Spotify and YouTube. I've included some of the classics such as Monster Mash, Thriller, This is Halloween, Ghostbusters, and Time Warp. I have also included some great alternative and indie rock songs that fit the theme and make for a really fun creepy listen! I've highlighted a few below:
Canadian twin sisters Tegan and Sara start us off with a hit about ghosting. "I was walking with a ghost."
Indie rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs bring us a spooky-sounding dance and goth mix, perfect for partying at Halloween. "Off with your head, dance 'til you're dead!"
This alternative song about being the "Final Girl" trope in a horror movie brings a cult classic film vibe to your Halloween celebrations. "In the final cut, in the final scene, there's a final girl, and you know that she should be screaming."
This alt rock band from St. Louis, MO describes a gruesome take on a love-hate relationship. "Her body is my coffin."
With a much calmer vibe, we have Halloween by beloved indie folk artist Phoebe Bridgers. "Baby, it's Halloween, and we can be anything."
Geeky comedy singer JoCo brings us a hilarious song about a zombie trying to talk his way into getting some brains to snack on. "We're at an impasse here--maybe we should compromise: If you open up the doors, we'll all come inside and eat your brains!"
A song about nightmares that is easy to dance to? It's a tough ask, but indie duo Matt and Kim pull it off perfectly! "Train yards like boneyards, sharpened knives."
This alt pop song about falling in love in October sets a beautiful vibe for autumn. "We fell in love in October. That's why I love fall."
Indie rock band The Decemberists brings us a creepy song about true crimes, told to fairytale proportions. "You better shut your windows tight. They're sharpening their cleavers and their knives."
While this conversation sounds romantic upon first listen, one of the lovers is actually speaking from beyond the grave. "You're gone, gone, gone away, I watched you disappear. All that's left is a ghost of you."
