A Depression Fighting Playlist

Music can have a huge impact on our mood, and for some people it can help us when we're struggling. To aid with mental health, I made a playlist called "Gonna Make It" full of depression-fighting, motivational songs.

The full playlist has about 8 hours worth of songs, but I've highlighted some of my favorites, along with why I chose them, below. The full playlist can be found on both Spotify and YouTube.

It's the song that inspired the title of the playlist. "I am gonna make it through this year if it kills me." I find the slightly tongue-in-cheek lyrics comforting.

This song belongs on every pick-me-up playlist. "Just do your best, do everything you can, and don't you worry what their bitter hearts are gonna say." It's an upbeat and motivational song with a pop-rock vibe.

A calm and gentle pep talk in a song. "And I think I'm gonna be fine. I'm gonna be good now. I'm gonna be everything I always wished I could now."

"Everyone blooms in their own time, some far ahead, some far behind. So wherever you are, don't worry, you're gonna be fine, fine, fine." It's easy to get caught up comparing ourselves to others. This song reminds us that just like flowers, everyone blooms in their own time.

This song encourages us to leave what's heavy behind. It's also a good reminder to experience and process our emotions. "If you're lost and you're lonely, go and figure out why. Take a trip to your dark side. Go on and have a good cry."

There is always time to get better, and this motivating song reminds us, "We could get better, because we're not dead yet." I've included a lot of songs from this English folk singer on the playlist, as many of his songs have a focus on mental health.

Sometimes you're trying to keep everything together, but it just keeps falling. This ska hit is as relatable as it is bouncy. "So here I am, doing everything I can, holding on to what I am, pretending I'm a superman." If you're a millennial, you might have the added nostalgia of this track being on the Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack.

When you're stuck thinking negatively, this song is a great mantra that, "The odds are that we will probably be alright." After all, you're more likely to fall in love than you are to get hit by an A-Train!

A song about looking on the bright side, Float On is perfect for when you're questioning how things will end up. "Don't worry, even if things end up a bit too heavy, we'll all float on."

This song reminds you you're not alone in trying to pull it together. "You gots to get it out, all the non-sense in your head. These days it gets so loud. Best you put it to rest." This alternative rock band is from Kansas City, so they feel like home!

It's nihilism VS existentialism in song form. "If it's inconsequential, then there's infinite potential." The South African alt-pop singer simplifies philosophy to let us know that we can be anything in this life.

What songs would you add to a depression fighting playlist?
